Artist
in Residence Program
Our
Artist in Residence Program offers individuals an opportunity to create
and explore new work in a fully furnished clay studio while developing
professionally and personally in a community of individuals with a passion
for clay and learning. |
| |
| |
What
our Residency Offers
Residents
of Springfield Pottery receive 24 hour access to the fully equipped,
3400 square foot facility, participation in any workshop and class (space
permitting), use of wheels, slab roller and extruder, firing privileges,
use of clay, studio glazes, slips, and raw materials (within reason),
and ample shelving. Possible opportunities exist to gain teaching experience
and exhibit and sell work in our gallery. In addition, this program gives
an individual a chance to have an ongoing dialogue about their work in
a supportive mentoring environment and gain first hand knowledge of the
day to day operation of a community clay center and fine craft gallery.
Responsibilities
of Residents
In exchange,
residents are expected to work a minimum of twelve regularly scheduled
hours each week for the studio. Duties include monitoring open studio
hours and taking care of customers in the gallery, loading and unloading
kilns, firing, mixing glazes, and performing other regular cleaning and
maintenance duties required in the daily operations of the facility.
Helping with periodic special events is expected. In addition, residents
are expected to work to develop a strong and cohesive body of work.
This
residency is a 2 year commitment. Longer residencies
are possible with annual evaluations given on continuance. The first
six months are considered a trial period with an evaluation meeting
after that period is complete.
Eligibility
The Artist
in Residence Program is available to all artists of varying degrees of
experience and career levels with a working knowledge of the ceramic
medium. Artists planning to pursue a MFA or studio career in ceramics
are encouraged to apply. Applicants must be 18 years of age or older.
In addition, applicants must be self motivated, reliable, and people-oriented.
Please note: It can be unfortunate when a resident finds themselves overwhelmed
with trying to find balance between their responsibilities as a resident,
making time to create and explore their own work, and working a job to
pay their bills. This balancing act is one that requires self discipline,
commitment and dedication – and is not impossible. Before applying
for any residency, make sure that it is the right commitment for you.
We encourage all interested applicants to visit the studio before applying.
